UNICEF RRSA - Airy Hill Primary School

At Pioneer House High School we very proud to be working towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award. The Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) is an initiative run by UNICEF UK, which encourages schools to place the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the forefront of its culture and curriculum.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.

Pioneer House High School currently holds the Bronze Rights Aware Award, which is the first stage of the Rights Respecting Schools programme. We are working this year towards our Silver award which focuses on the three strands of:

  • Teaching and Learning about rights – through training, curriculum, assemblies
  • Teaching and learning through rights – by modelling rights respecting language and attitudes
  • Being ambassadors for the rights of others – developing as rights respecting citizens

On our journey towards the silver award, we are working towards embedding children’s rights throughout the school, in its policies, practice and ethos. This will also prepare our students in becoming informed responsible and active citizens of the next generation, to the advantage of their local community and the wider world in which they live.

We have been promoting the values and principles of the ‘United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child’ and using it to support our vision for whole school improvement. We have been developing this approach to build upon our values-based learning, continue positive cultural development and create a supportive atmosphere where everyone in the school is respectful and tolerant of each other.

The Award is not just about what children do, but just as importantly what adults do – in Rights Respecting Schools, children’s rights are promoted with adults and children working on a journey together.
